Reduce Summer Heat & Improve Home Comfort

Help Your Home Handle Texas Hill Country Temperatures

Kerrville homeowners know how intense summer warmth can become across the Texas Hill Country. A home can notice the difference quickly when the upper structure spends the day in direct sun. When the roof stays exposed for hours, the area above your ceiling can reach extreme conditions and place additional demand on the cooling system below.

Radiant barrier insulation helps address that heat before as much of it spreads through the attic. The reflective foil sends radiant energy back toward the roof instead of allowing surrounding surfaces to absorb it.

This type of insulation does not replace traditional attic insulation. Existing insulation slows conductive energy transfer, while a radiant barrier reflects radiant energy from the roof deck. Proper attic insulation, sealing gaps, and the reflective layer can work together as part of a more complete system.

Green Energy of San Antonio can review your current insulation level and explain whether you need to add insulation or make other improvements. Wet material, visible gaps, or a room that never seems to cool can each be a sign that the insulated area needs attention. Attic ventilation may also be added when appropriate as part of a radiant barrier or attic insulation project, but it is not offered as a standalone service.

What is a Radiant Barrier?

Reflective Insulation Designed for Hot Texas Attics

A radiant barrier is a reflective material, usually made with aluminum foil, installed beneath the roof deck or along the rafters. The foil side faces an open air space so it can reflect radiant energy instead of absorbing it.

Traditional products perform a different job. Fiberglass and blown-in products resist conductive heat flow, while radiant barrier insulation reduces radiant energy transfer coming from the hot roof system.

That difference matters in Kerrville, TX, where conditions above the ceiling can become extreme during summer. In a home without enough protection, that heat can affect upper rooms, HVAC components, ductwork, and overall cooling efficiency.

When properly installed, reflective radiant barrier insulation can reflect up to 97% of radiant energy. Some homes may also see significant reductions in attic temperatures depending on sun exposure, ventilation, existing insulation, and other conditions.

Learn more about how radiant barriers work.

How Does Radiant Barrier Work?

Radiant barrier insulation works by interrupting the transfer of radiant energy between the hot roof and the surfaces below.

As the sun heats roofing materials, heat moves through the sheathing and radiates toward the attic floor, insulation, walls, and ductwork. Without a reflective layer, those surfaces can continue absorbing heat throughout the day.

The foil reflects much of that radiant energy back toward the roof. Traditional insulation still slows conductive transfer, while attic air sealing can help limit leaks that allow cooled air to escape into unconditioned areas.

Proper installation matters. The foil side must face an open air space, and the material should not be treated as a vapor barrier unless the specific roof system requires one.

Benefits of Radiant Barrier

Stay More Comfortable Through Summer and Winter

Radiant barrier insulation can help reduce the amount of summer heat building above your living space. A cooler attic can make rooms below the roof easier to keep comfortable and reduce the warmth surrounding HVAC equipment.

Reducing that load can also support better air conditioning efficiency and may lower cooling costs. Green Energy of San Antonio advertises potential energy-bill savings of up to 35%, although actual savings depend on the home and how much cooling energy is being used.

During winter, proper attic insulation remains especially important for limiting heat loss. Traditional products, sealing gaps, and reflective components can help the home perform more consistently across changing weather.

Built for Demanding Texas Conditions, Made In The USA

Green Energy Radiant Barrier uses reflective aluminum built for high attic temperatures. The product is built to perform in demanding Texas conditions and is installed to create an effective reflective surface. The material reflects radiant energy rather than functioning like insulation that absorbs and slows conductive heat.

Enhance Your Existing Insulation

Radiant barrier insulation complements existing insulation rather than replacing it. If coverage has settled, become uneven, or is too low, Green Energy of San Antonio may recommend adding blown-in insulation. Poor coverage can also lead to uneven comfort from area to area, so the existing setup should be checked before work begins to rebuild the thermal blanket above the ceiling.

Sealing gaps can also matter. Openings around fixtures and other areas may allow cooled air to escape, so the overall system should be considered instead of focusing on one material alone. Dedicated air sealing is not offered as a standalone Green Energy service.

Green Energy of San Antonio does not install spray foam, open cell foam, or other foam insulation. If your home already contains spray foam, the existing setup can be considered when determining whether one of Green Energy's available insulation solutions makes sense.

Why Kerrville Homes Benefit From Radiant Barrier

San Marcos homes spend much of the summer under strong Texas sun, allowing roofing materials and sheathing to keep feeding heat into the space below long after the hottest part of the day.

Local housing also varies considerably. Established homes around areas such as Rio Vista can have different insulation and roof conditions from newer construction around Blanco Vista. Looking at the actual roof exposure and existing insulation is more useful than assuming a home's age tells the whole story.

Two-story homes and rooms directly below the roof can be particularly difficult to keep comfortable. Reducing summer heat gain from above can help stabilize those spaces and lower some of the demand placed on the cooling system.

Thinking Of Installing Solar Panels?

Improving the efficiency of your home before adding solar can reduce the amount of energy the system needs to offset. Radiant barrier insulation helps reduce overhead heat, while proper thermal protection can limit other forms of energy loss. For Kerrville homeowners considering solar, improving the building envelope first may help you invest in the right size system instead of paying to offset avoidable cooling demand.

We had a mid-grade radiant barrier installed and also had some insulation blown in over our garage, which has never had any the entire time that we have lived in this house. They did an excellent job and I can definitely notice a difference in how much less hot it gets in our garage now. It’s still pretty toasty but not hot enough to bake a cake out there anymore!! We are VERY satisfied with the work that we had done, and would definitely recommend Green Energy to anyone!!! 😁 👍

Six years ago Green Energy installed my radiant barrier, blown-in insulation, and a couple solar powered attic exhaust fans. They did a terrific job and I am still super happy with the outcome. I combined all of this work with replacing my single pane windows with double pane. Immediately my monthly average electric bill dropped from about $425 to about $220 and has remained in that range ever since!

Last week I called them regarding a warranty question. The phone was answered immediately and I received nothing short of superior support. I cannot express exactly how happy I am with Green Energy, even six years after installation!

I had Green Energy of San Antonio come in and install Radiant Barrier, Soffit vents, and install a ridge vent on my house. They did an excellent job! My house was instantly cooler, and my HVAC system actually turned off. It usually runs non stop during the day because of the temperature outside. Thank you so much for everything!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is radiant barrier insulation worth it in Kerrville?

It can be a worthwhile investment for Kerrville homeowners dealing with extreme summer conditions, high cooling costs, or rooms that become difficult to keep comfortable during summer.

A radiant barrier is most useful in a hot climate where the upper surface absorbs strong solar energy. The reflective layer reduces radiant energy entering the space below the roof, while traditional insulation handles conductive heat.

The actual benefits depend on sun exposure, existing insulation, draft control, HVAC efficiency, and household energy use.

How much cooler can my attic get?

Temperatures above the ceiling in Kerrville can become extremely high during hot summer weather. A properly installed radiant barrier can reduce those temperatures significantly.

The exact difference depends on the upper structure, ventilation, installation, roof exposure, and other conditions.

The main benefit is reducing the warmth surrounding your insulation, ductwork, and cooling equipment.

How much can radiant barrier insulation lower energy bills?

Green Energy of San Antonio advertises potential energy savings of up to 35% with its reflective system.

That is not a guaranteed result. Monthly energy bills depend on the size of the home, air conditioning efficiency, insulation, thermostat settings, sun exposure, and daily energy use.

A free estimate can help determine whether the expected benefits justify the cost for your house and help you compare long-term cost against expected savings before you spend money on the project. Project cost varies with size, access, coverage, and the work required.

Does it replace traditional insulation?

No. Radiant barrier insulation and traditional insulation manage different types of energy transfer.

The reflective material addresses radiant energy from above. Fiberglass and blown-in products slow conductive transfer through the ceiling and walls. Insulated walls and an insulated ceiling help the thermal envelope perform as a system.

For many homes, the strongest approach is proper attic insulation and reflective protection.

Why does air sealing matter?

Attic air sealing helps close leaks around openings where cooled air can escape.

If conditioned air is leaking into unconditioned space, adding insulation alone may not solve every efficiency issue. Those conditions should be considered together when reviewing the thermal envelope.

Green Energy of San Antonio's confirmed services for this type of project are radiant barrier and blown-in attic insulation. Dedicated air sealing is not offered as a standalone service.

Does Green Energy install spray foam insulation?

No. Green Energy of San Antonio does not install spray foam, open cell foam, or other foam insulation.

Spray foam is a different type of insulation system that can provide a strong air seal when correctly specified. Green Energy focuses its attic work on radiant barrier and blown-in insulation.

If foam is already installed in your home, the existing conditions can be considered before additional work is recommended.

Can radiant barrier be installed with a metal roof?

In many cases, yes. A metal roof can still transfer radiant energy toward the space below, so reflective insulation may be beneficial depending on the building assembly.

The installation method has to account for the sheathing, air space, existing insulation, moisture control, and overall assembly.

The construction should be reviewed before determining how the material should be installed.

Is radiant barrier a vapor barrier?

Not automatically. Radiant barrier and vapor barrier products perform different jobs.

A radiant barrier reflects radiant energy. A vapor barrier is designed to control moisture movement through a building assembly.

Some foil-faced products may have low vapor permeability, so moisture and construction conditions need to be considered before selecting or installing materials.

Why does the foil side need an air space?

The foil needs to face open air so it can reflect radiant energy effectively.

If the reflective surface is pressed directly against another solid material, it cannot perform the same way. Maintaining the correct air space is one reason professional installation matters.

Does radiant barrier help during winter?

Radiant barrier is primarily useful for controlling summer overhead heat in Texas, while traditional insulation plays the larger role in limiting winter heat loss.

A properly insulated attic helps keep indoor air where it belongs during colder weather.

Using the right mix of materials can improve year-round efficiency rather than focusing only on seasonal cooling.

Were radiant barriers invented by NASA?

Not exactly. Reflective insulation existed before NASA, but NASA significantly advanced reflective thermal-control technology for spacecraft and astronaut protection.

NASA later refined and expanded the use of highly reflective thermal materials, helping shape the technology now associated with modern radiant barriers.

Residential radiant barrier insulation uses the same basic principle: reflect energy from a hot surface before as much of it reaches the space below.

Can radiant barrier protect HVAC equipment?

A cooler attic can create a less extreme environment around HVAC components and ductwork.

Reducing surrounding temperatures may help the air conditioning system work under less demanding conditions during summer.

That does not replace HVAC maintenance, but reducing heat around the equipment can support overall system efficiency.

Will radiant barrier damage my shingles or roof?

Radiant barrier should not damage shingles when properly installed.

The installer needs to account for the roof assembly, air flow, moisture, roof deck, and surrounding materials. Those details matter for both effectiveness and long-term performance.

Can I install it myself?

Green Energy of San Antonio recommends professional installation.

Correct coverage, foil orientation, fastening, and air space all affect how well the system reflects heat. Working in an attic during a Texas summer can also expose homeowners to extreme temperatures.

Professional installation helps ensure the material is installed safely and correctly.

What are signs my attic needs more insulation?

Uneven room temperatures, high energy bills, visible thin spots in insulation, and an air conditioning system that seems to run constantly can all be signs that the current thermal layer needs attention.

You may also notice drafts or areas where conditioned air appears to escape around one or more ceiling penetrations.

Green Energy of San Antonio can inspect the current level and explain whether you should add insulation or address another issue first.

Do radiant barriers affect WiFi and cell phone signals?

Radiant barrier insulation should not prevent normal use of WiFi, Bluetooth, LTE, or cell phone service inside the home.

The reflective foil is installed in a specific area of the building rather than creating a complete metal enclosure around the living space.
