Save Up To 35% On Energy Bills

Save Money Keeping the Temperature of Your Home Stable Year-round

For homes near Randolph Air Force Base, attic heat isn't just an inconvenience, it's a year-round drain on comfort and energy costs. Radiant barrier insulation gives your attic a way to push that heat back out instead of letting it soak in and spread through the house.

The difference between radiant barrier and standard attic insulation comes down to timing. Blown-in insulation slows heat down after it's already inside your attic. Radiant barrier stops a large share of it before it ever gets there. In neighborhoods like Rose Garden and Coronado Village, where many homes date back decades, that early intervention often makes the biggest difference.

Green Energy of San Antonio can inspect your attic, review your current insulation levels, check attic ventilation, and recommend the right solution for your home.

What Is a Radiant Barrier?

Dependable Non-Absorbing Insulation for Homes Old and New

Installed beneath the roof deck along the rafters, a radiant barrier has one job: send the sun's radiant energy back out before it can settle into your attic and work its way toward the rooms below.

That's a fundamentally different approach than blown-in insulation, which raises R-value and slows conductive heat transfer once it's already present in the attic. Radiant barrier intervenes earlier, cutting off radiant heat gain at the roofline itself.

Universal City has a real mix of housing stock, decades-old homes near the base alongside newer builds in areas like Olympia Hills. Whichever category your home falls into, radiant barrier insulation addresses a heat source that plenty of attics were never built to handle.

Learn more about how radiant barriers work.

How Does Radiant Barrier Work?

Your roof takes on solar heat all day long, and that heat doesn't stay put. It moves through the roof decking, radiates into the attic, and eventually pushes down into your living space, forcing your cooling system to work overtime.

A radiant barrier intercepts that heat early. Rather than letting it slowly conduct through your existing insulation, it reflects the majority of it back out right away, as long as the reflective side is installed facing an open attic air space. Get that detail right, and summer heat gain drops noticeably.

Benefits of Radiant Barriers

Comfort That Doesn't Quit When the Season Changes

A Radiant Barrier earns its keep in both directions. During hot stretches, it reflects radiant heat away from your living space. In cooler months, it helps trap your home's interior heat instead of letting it slip into the attic, keeping temperatures more consistent no matter the time of year.

That consistency matters most in the parts of a Universal City home that always seem to lag behind the rest, older additions, upstairs rooms, or anywhere with heavy sun exposure. Less heat transfer through the attic means less demand on your AC and a home that's easier to live in overall.

For homeowners dealing with hot rooms, high energy bills, or an AC that runs constantly, radiant barrier can be a valuable part of a complete attic performance system.

Built From a Material That Doesn't easily Break Down made in the USA

Green Energy Radiant Barrier is made with aluminum, valued for its strong reflectivity and dependable performance against corrosion, oxidation, and aging.

That's a real advantage in a place like Universal City, where decades of Texas heat and humidity have already worn down a lot of original attic insulation. Aluminum holds up well against exactly those conditions.

Not a Replacement, a Reinforcement

A radiant barrier isn't meant to replace the insulation you already have, it's meant to work alongside it. Each one handles a different kind of heat transfer, so together they cover more ground than either could alone.

Blown-in insulation slows conductive heat. The radiant barrier reflects radiant heat. Combined, they cut down on overall attic heat and support better comfort throughout older Universal City homes especially.

If your current insulation is thin, settled, or damaged, radiant barrier alone might not be the full fix. Green Energy of San Antonio can evaluate both and let you know exactly where your home stands.

Thinking About Solar Down the Road?

Before sizing a solar system, it makes sense to lower how much energy your home actually needs. Radiant barrier insulation does exactly that by cutting the attic heat your cooling system currently has to fight. A more efficient home can often work with a smaller solar setup, which brings the installation cost down too. Green Energy of San Antonio helps Universal City homeowners get there with radiant barrier, attic insulation, window replacement, and other upgrades, well before solar panels ever enter the picture. We are very pleased with the radiant barrier we had Green Energy install in our attic. We have definitely noticed a difference in the closets that the attics are connected too. We had an issue with the upstairs AC unit after install and Green Energy responded immediately even though it was after 8pm. The issue was resolved quickly and efficiently. Personal and responsive, professional service. The value will continue to tally up as the years go by. Thank you to the Green Energy team!

We had a mid-grade radiant barrier installed and also had some insulation blown in over our garage, which has never had any the entire time that we have lived in this house. They did an excellent job and I can definitely notice a difference in how much less hot it gets in our garage now. It’s still pretty toasty but not hot enough to bake a cake out there anymore!! We are VERY satisfied with the work that we had done, and would definitely recommend Green Energy to anyone!!! 😁 👍

Six years ago Green Energy installed my radiant barrier, blown-in insulation, and a couple solar powered attic exhaust fans. They did a terrific job and I am still super happy with the outcome. I combined all of this work with replacing my single pane windows with double pane. Immediately my monthly average electric bill dropped from about $425 to about $220 and has remained in that range ever since!

Last week I called them regarding a warranty question. The phone was answered immediately and I received nothing short of superior support. I cannot express exactly how happy I am with Green Energy, even six years after installation!

I had Green Energy of San Antonio come in and install Radiant Barrier, Soffit vents, and install a ridge vent on my house. They did an excellent job! My house was instantly cooler, and my HVAC system actually turned off. It usually runs non stop during the day because of the temperature outside. Thank you so much for everything!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is radiant barrier a good fit for older homes near Randolph AFB?

Yes, often especially so. Many homes in neighborhoods like Rose Garden and Coronado Village were built decades ago, and adding radiant barrier alongside existing insulation can meaningfully improve how those attics perform today.

Will radiant barrier damage my roof shingles?

No. When installed correctly, radiant barrier doesn't cause shingle damage. Any minor increase in shingle temperature is nothing compared to what Texas summer sun already puts them through.

How much can radiant barrier save on energy bills?

It depends on your home's age and current insulation, but 35% annual savings is a realistic benchmark in a hot climate like ours. Older homes with dated insulation tend to see the biggest jump.

Do newer homes in Universal City need radiant barrier too?

They can still benefit. Even recently built homes in areas like Olympia Hills face the same intense Texas sun, and radiant barrier helps keep that heat from reaching the living space below.

Can I install radiant barrier insulation myself?

We'd steer you toward professional installation instead. Getting the placement and air space exactly right takes know-how, and small mistakes can meaningfully cut into how well the radiant barrier performs.
