Big Hill Country homes come with big roofs, and big roofs take on a lot of sun. Radiant barrier insulation gives your attic a way to send that heat back out instead of letting it settle in and spread through the rooms below.

Radiant barriers and blown-in attic insulation aren't solving the same problem. One increases R-value and slows heat as it conducts through the attic, the other reflects radiant heat before conduction even starts. In sprawling Boerne properties, especially those in communities like Esperanza and Cordillera Ranch, that early defense tends to matter more given how much roof surface there is to manage.

Green Energy of San Antonio can inspect your attic, review your current insulation levels, check attic ventilation, and recommend the right solution for your home.

What Is a Radiant Barrier?

Rugged Non-Absorbing Insulation Made for Hill Country Homes

A radiant barrier is installed beneath the roof deck, along the rafters, where it does one thing well: reflect the sun's radiant energy back out before it can settle into the attic and creep down into your living space.

Blown-in insulation approaches the problem differently. It raises R-value and slows conductive heat transfer once heat is already present in the attic. The radiant barrier gets there first, addressing radiant heat gain right at the roofline.

Boerne's larger custom homes, particularly in communities like Esperanza, tend to have more roof surface exposed to direct sun than the average house, which means more radiant heat gain to manage in the first place. A properly installed radiant barrier takes a real bite out of that.

Learn more about how radiant barriers work.

How Does Radiant Barrier Work?

All day long, your roof absorbs solar heat, and that heat has to go somewhere. It passes through the roof decking, radiates into the attic, and eventually makes its way into the living space, putting extra strain on your air conditioner in the process.

A radiant barrier changes that outcome. Instead of letting heat build up and slowly conduct downward, it reflects most of it back out immediately, provided the reflective surface faces an open attic air space. On a large Hill Country roof, that single design detail can make an outsized difference.

Benefits of Radiant Barrier

Comfort That Carries Through the Whole Year

Radiant Barrier isn't limited to summer duty. In hot months, it reflects radiant heat away from your home's interior. In cooler months, it helps keep your interior heat from escaping into the attic, which means steadier indoor temperatures no matter the season.

That kind of consistency counts for a lot in larger Boerne homes, where bonus rooms, upstairs bedrooms, and additions built over expansive attic space often run hotter than the rest of the house. Cutting attic heat transfer in those areas takes real pressure off your cooling system.

For homeowners dealing with hot rooms, high energy bills, or an AC that runs constantly, radiant barrier can be a valuable part of a complete attic performance system.

Built From a Material That Doesn't easily Break Down made in the USA

Green Energy Radiant Barrier is made with aluminum, chosen for its strong reflectivity and its resistance to corrosion, oxidation, and aging compared to other reflective materials on the market.

Hill Country attics deal with plenty of heat, humidity, and seasonal swings over the years, and Green Energy Radiant Barrier is engineered to hold its performance through all of it.

Layer It On, Don't Swap It Out

Adding a radiant barrier doesn't mean removing your current attic insulation, the two are meant to work in tandem. Each addresses a different form of heat transfer, so pairing them covers more ground than relying on just one.

Blown-in insulation slows conductive heat. Radiant barrier reflects radiant heat. Together, they reduce overall attic temperatures and improve comfort throughout larger Boerne homes with more attic space to manage.

If your existing insulation has settled, thinned, or been damaged over time, radiant barrier by itself may not fully solve the issue. Green Energy of San Antonio can evaluate both and tell you exactly what your home needs.

Thinking About Solar for Your Property?

Sizing a solar system starts with knowing how much energy your home actually uses, and radiant barrier insulation can lower that number before you ever get a quote. Less attic heat means less work for your cooling system and a smaller energy footprint overall. A more efficient home often needs a smaller, less costly solar setup as a result. Green Energy of San Antonio helps Boerne homeowners get there through radiant barrier, attic insulation, window replacement, and other upgrades, all worth exploring before installing solar panels. We are very pleased with the radiant barrier we had Green Energy install in our attic. We have definitely noticed a difference in the closets that the attics are connected too. We had an issue with the upstairs AC unit after install and Green Energy responded immediately even though it was after 8pm. The issue was resolved quickly and efficiently. Personal and responsive, professional service. The value will continue to tally up as the years go by. Thank you to the Green Energy team!

We had a mid-grade radiant barrier installed and also had some insulation blown in over our garage, which has never had any the entire time that we have lived in this house. They did an excellent job and I can definitely notice a difference in how much less hot it gets in our garage now. It’s still pretty toasty but not hot enough to bake a cake out there anymore!! We are VERY satisfied with the work that we had done, and would definitely recommend Green Energy to anyone!!! 😁 👍

Six years ago Green Energy installed my radiant barrier, blown-in insulation, and a couple solar powered attic exhaust fans. They did a terrific job and I am still super happy with the outcome. I combined all of this work with replacing my single pane windows with double pane. Immediately my monthly average electric bill dropped from about $425 to about $220 and has remained in that range ever since!

Last week I called them regarding a warranty question. The phone was answered immediately and I received nothing short of superior support. I cannot express exactly how happy I am with Green Energy, even six years after installation!

I had Green Energy of San Antonio come in and install Radiant Barrier, Soffit vents, and install a ridge vent on my house. They did an excellent job! My house was instantly cooler, and my HVAC system actually turned off. It usually runs non stop during the day because of the temperature outside. Thank you so much for everything!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is radiant barrier worth it for large Boerne homes?

Often, yes, and sometimes especially so. Bigger homes in communities like Esperanza and Cordillera Ranch come with more roof surface and higher ceilings, which usually means more attic heat to manage in the first place. A radiant barrier is built to handle exactly that.

How much can I save on energy bills?

It depends on your attic size and current insulation, but homeowners in sunny climates can realistically save up to 35% a year. Larger homes with more roof surface, common throughout Boerne, tend to see the biggest gains.

Is Boerne actually cooler than San Antonio?

To some extent, yes. The Hill Country's higher elevation keeps Boerne a few degrees milder on average. That said, summers here are still hot enough to generate serious attic heat, particularly in larger, sun-exposed homes.

Will the radiant barrier damage my roof shingles?

No, not when it's installed correctly. Shingle temperature may tick up slightly, but nowhere near enough to cause any real difference compared to a typical Texas summer.

Can I install radiant barrier insulation myself?

We recommend professional installation for maximum effectiveness. A radiant barrier depends on exact placement and proper air space to perform well, and even small errors can noticeably reduce its effectiveness.
